Nyerere National Park
Formed in 2019 from the northern section of the legendary Selous Game Reserve, Nyerere National Park is Africa’s largest stand-alone national park, spanning over 30,000 sq km. Named in honour of Mwalimu Julius Nyerere, Tanzania’s founding father, it offers an untamed safari experience with fewer crowds and exceptional biodiversity.
Part of a greater conservation area—together with the remaining Selous Game Reserve—this vast wilderness covers around 50,000 sq km, several times the size of the Serengeti. The park and reserve teem with wildlife: an estimated 40,000 hippos, up to 150,000 buffalo, 100,000 wildebeest, 35,000 zebras, and an impressive predator population, including 4,000 lions, leopards, hyenas, and crocodiles. It’s one of the best places in Africa to see African wild dogs (around 50% of the population lives here) as well as rarer

Nyerere National Park, Tanzania Safari
The Rufiji River, Tanzania’s largest, winds through the park, creating lakes, channels, and seasonal wetlands that sustain an incredible variety of life. This riverine habitat supports large pods of hippos, basking crocodiles, and over 440 bird species. Boat safaris offer a unique way to observe these ecosystems, while guided walks reveal the beauty of the floodplains and Miombo woodlands.
Less frequented than the northern safari circuit, Nyerere offers a wilder, more private atmosphere—perfect for travellers seeking an authentic and varied safari, combining traditional game drives with boat excursions and walking safaris.
